I am delighted to introduce the International Journal of Tourism and Spirituality (IJTS) to its readers. Published by University of Science and Culture, IJTS aims to be the leading international journal for the study of tourism from the viewpoint of spirituality. It aims to provide a critical understanding of spiritual perceptions and insights associated with any kind of tourism. It also seeks to provide an international forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas through the publication of critical, theoretically sound articles as well as case studies in the field from around the globe. The journal will be of particular interest to those studying the spiritual aspects of tourism with an interdisciplinary approach.
Nowadays, spirituality, which has been fundamental to human existence life since ancient times, is one of the critical subjects in academic debates, particularly within tourism literature. Tourism in its nature is a spiritual activity according to its spiritual elements. Spiritual tourism does not refer to a certain type of tourism; rather, spirituality can be associated with every kind of tourism. The long history of Iran in spiritual subjects and existence of numerous Iranian scientists and philosophers in the field of spirituality encouraged us to hold the first international conference on Tourism and Spirituality (ICTS) on January 27 and 28, 2016. The conference brought together researchers with shared interests from around the world who presented their work, ideas, and practical experiences on the state of tourism and spirituality. The success of the conference was a motivation for the publication of the present journal. We hope that it can be an effective step toward bridging the gap between tourism and spirituality from the perspective of both sustainable development and promoting spirituality in human life.
